This is the first part of the second movement of a 4 part piece that I wrote for banjo, cello (Ethan Sutton) and drums (JT Bates). On this scratch recording, Ethan Sutton is on the cello. The whole thing will be performed live July 14-17th with members of the Eclectic Edge Ensemble dance troupe at the Ritz Theater in Minneapolis.  Details: http://www.ritzdolls.com/2011/03/10/eclectic-edge-ensemble/

Open B tuning sounded like the blizzard that is happening outside my window right now in Minneapolis.
There are 2 banjo tracks on here, one is doing the groove and the other is on top. A third banjo track can be heard brushing the head. With some panning and a bit of garage band tweaking, it sounds like someone who stayed inside their attic all day and refused to go outside in a blizzard. Enjoy.

Something from years ago that was recorded using an electric banjo without an amplifier. Tons of fake digital reverb added. Recorded late at night using the internal microphone on a laptop that had a rather noisy fan.  Cheap way to simulate tape hiss I guess.

A little something in double C tuning.

The Duets

Posted on Wednesday, 2 February

The Twin Cities are filled with the most accomplished musicians you’ll ever hear.  I’m fortunate to know and have played with some of them.  If I could play in a band with everyone of them I would, but nobody has that kind of time.  However, we can all make time for one track.

Work has begun on duet recordings of the banjo interacting with musicians from Minneapolis/St. Paul.  Updates, pics, video and music will be posted on this page as the winter continues on.  Hopefully by the time it all melts, a recording will surface.  MR
